  1. Choose the Search tab or the Barcode tab.
  2. Search: enter a name or brand (at least 2 characters) and press Search or Enter — search runs only after you submit.
  3. Barcode: scan with your camera (supported browsers) or type 8–14 digits.
  4. Select a search result (Search mode) or wait for barcode product details to load.
  5. Review nutrition per 100 g, nutrition per serving, ingredients, allergens, and labels when available.

Methodology & nutritional database normalization

The food search engine queries verified nutritional data compiled from the USDA FoodData Central Foundation foods and Open Food Facts public repositories. All nutrient profiles are normalized to a standard 100g reference baseline to enable fair comparisons across food types.

Portion scaling computes linear multipliers based on common household measures (e.g. 1 cup, 1 tablespoon, 1 medium unit, 1 package) using verified density coefficients.

Worked nutritional lookup example

  • Search query: 'Hass Avocado' (USDA FDC ID: 171705).
  • Standard 100g profile: 160 kcal, 2.0g protein, 8.5g carbohydrate (6.7g dietary fiber, 0.7g sugar), 14.7g total fat (2.1g saturated, 9.8g monounsaturated), 485mg potassium.
  • Serving selection: 1 medium avocado (edible yield ~150g, scaling factor 1.5).
  • Scaled output: 240 kcal, 3.0g protein, 12.8g carbs (10.0g fiber), 22.0g fat, 728mg potassium.
  • Interpretation: High monounsaturated fatty acid and dietary fiber density; low net glycemic impact.

Data source

Product data comes from Open Food Facts via this site’s same-origin proxy. Missing fields show as Not available — values are never invented. Coverage varies by country and product.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting live search on every keystroke — you must submit Search.
  • Assuming every barcode exists in Open Food Facts.
  • Using crowdsourced Nutri-Score/NOVA or macros as medical advice without checking the package.

Limitations

No custom serving recalculation. Not a meal builder (use Food Nutrition Calculator) and not a calorie-target planner. Crowdsourced data may be incomplete or outdated. Not medical advice.

Privacy

Camera frames for barcode scanning stay on your device. Search queries and barcode digits are sent through the site’s Open Food Facts proxy for lookup. Optional local history, if enabled, stays on your device.

FAQ

What is the Food Nutrition Finder?

It is a free lookup tool for nutrition information on foods and packaged products — calories, macros, ingredients, allergens, and related labels when Open Food Facts provides them. It is not a calorie-target calculator or medical advice.

How do I search for a food?

Open the Search tab, type a product name or brand (at least 2 characters), then press Search or Enter. Results appear after you submit — the tool does not search on every keystroke. Select a result to load full nutrition details from Open Food Facts.

How do I scan a barcode?

Switch to the Barcode tab to scan with your camera (on supported browsers) or enter the digits under the barcode bars (8–14 digits). Camera frames stay on your device; only the barcode/product lookup goes through this site’s proxy to Open Food Facts. Not every barcode will match a product.

What is the difference between nutrition per 100 g and per serving?

Nutrition per 100 g is standardized for comparing products. Nutrition per serving uses the product’s stated serving size when Open Food Facts includes those values. The tool does not invent missing serving data and does not recalculate for a custom quantity you enter.

Where does the nutrition data come from?

Product and search data come from Open Food Facts, a crowdsourced open food database. Coverage and accuracy vary. Always check packaging for critical dietary or allergen decisions.

Why can’t I find a product?

Open Food Facts does not list every product worldwide. Try another spelling, a broader name, the brand, or barcode lookup. Network errors or temporary rate limits can also block a search.

What are Nutri-Score and NOVA?

When available, Nutri-Score and NOVA are informational labels provided by Open Food Facts. They are not medical advice, clinical assessments, or personalized dietary recommendations.

Are my searches or camera images stored or uploaded?

Camera frames for barcode scanning are processed locally and are not uploaded as camera images to Open Food Facts. Search queries and barcode values are sent through this site’s same-origin Open Food Facts proxy for product lookup. Optional local history may stay on your device.

Can I enter a custom serving size?

No. The current tool does not allow users to enter a custom quantity and recalculate nutrition values. It shows per 100 g and per-serving values from Open Food Facts when available.

Is the nutrition information medical or guaranteed accurate?

No. Data is crowdsourced reference information and may be incomplete or inaccurate. Missing fields show as Not available. For allergies or important dietary decisions, verify the product’s current packaging and consult a qualified professional when appropriate.
