Meal Prep & Portion Calculator

Free meal prep and portion calculator. Divide a prepared batch by serving size or portion count (with optional waste), plan how much food to cook for people and meals, or divide manual batch nutrition totals per portion. Mass and volume stay separate — no density conversion. For food-database nutrition, use Food Nutrition Calculator.

How to Use the Meal Prep & Portion Calculator

Choose a mode tab, enter your values, and press Calculate. Optional food name is labeling only — it never changes the math. Practical planning only — not medical advice.

  1. Select Divide a Batch, Plan a Meal Prep, or Nutrition per Portion.
  2. Enter the quantities, units, and optional waste % or container capacity required by that mode.
  3. Press Calculate.
  4. Review full portions, remaining food, total food to prepare, or nutrition per portion.
  5. Adjust inputs or switch modes to try another scenario.

Formulas and worked examples

  • Divide by serving size: usable = total × (1 − waste%); full portions = floor(usable ÷ serving size). Example: 3500 g with 3% waste → 3395 g usable; 350 g portions → 9 full portions, 245 g remaining.
  • Divide by portion count: portion size = usable ÷ portions. Example: 1000 g ÷ 4 = 250 g per portion.
  • Plan meal prep: total portions = people × meals; total food = portions × portion size. Example: 5 × 2 × 350 g = 10 portions, 3500 g.
  • Nutrition per portion: each nutrient ÷ portions. Example: 3500 cal ÷ 10 = 350 cal per portion.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting grams ↔ milliliters conversion (density is not assumed).
  • Entering nutrition totals when you meant to look up foods — use Food Nutrition Calculator for that.
  • Treating portion math as medical or dietary advice.

Limitations

Mass and volume stay separate. No food database lookup and no density conversion. Nutrition per Portion only divides totals you already know. Practical planning estimates only — not medical advice.

FAQ

How do I calculate portions from a batch?

Use Divide a Batch. Enter total prepared quantity and unit, optional waste %, then either a serving size (how many full portions fit) or a number of portions (total ÷ portions = size per portion).

How do I calculate how much food to prepare?

Use Plan a Meal Prep. Enter number of people, meals per person, and portion size. Total portions = people × meals. Total food = portions × portion size.

How many meal-prep containers do I need?

When you divide by serving size, full portions equals recommended containers (one portion per container). Optionally enter container capacity to see how many full containers fit the usable batch.

Can I include waste or cooking loss?

Yes in Divide a Batch. Enter a waste percentage (0–99%). Usable quantity = total × (1 − waste%). Portions are calculated from usable quantity only.

Can I calculate nutrition per portion?

Yes in Nutrition per Portion. Enter total batch calories and macros you already know, plus portion count. The tool divides evenly — it does not look up foods.

Does the calculator convert grams to milliliters?

No. Mass (g, kg, oz, lb) and volume (ml, L) are separate. Converting grams to milliliters requires food density, which this tool does not assume.

Can I use ounces or pounds?

Yes for mass units. Select oz or lb. Standard conversion constants apply internally; results stay in the unit you choose.

Can I use this for meal prep?

Yes. Divide cooked batches into containers, plan total food for weekly prep, or split manual nutrition totals per container.

Is this a nutrition recommendation?

No. Results are math from your inputs. Not medical advice, not a prescribed diet, and not personalized nutrition guidance.

What is the difference between this and Food Nutrition Calculator?

This tool divides quantities or manual batch totals you enter. Food Nutrition Calculator estimates calories and macros from curated foods and servings. Use both for different questions.
