How to Use the GPA / CGPA Calculator

Choose a grade scale, add subjects with credit hours and letter grades for one or more semesters, then calculate semester GPA and cumulative CGPA.

1. Select Grade scale: 4.0, 5.0, or Custom (edit letter → points if Custom).
2. Pick or add a semester tab; rename semesters if helpful.
3. For each subject, enter optional name, credit hours, and letter grade.
4. Add or remove subject rows (up to 20 per semester); add another semester if needed.
5. Press Calculate to see semester GPA, CGPA, credits, percentage estimate, and performance summary.
6. Press Reset to clear all semesters or switch scale to change the point map.

GPA and CGPA formulas

• Grade points per subject = credit hours × points for the letter grade
• Semester GPA = sum of grade points in semester ÷ sum of credits in semester
• CGPA = sum of grade points across all semesters ÷ sum of credits across all semesters
• Percentage estimate ≈ (CGPA ÷ scale max) × 100

Worked examples

• One subject: Math 3 credits, A → GPA 4.0 on 4.0 scale.
• Semester: 3-credit A and 4-credit B → (3×4 + 4×3) ÷ 7 = 3.43 GPA.
• Two semesters with different credit totals → CGPA weights by credits, not by averaging 3.43 and another semester GPA alone.

Common mistakes

• Averaging semester GPAs instead of weighting by credits for CGPA.
• Using 4.0 letter points when your school publishes a 5.0 scale.
• Omitting failed or repeated courses your policy still counts.
• Treating the percentage estimate as an official transcript conversion.

FAQ

Which grading scales are supported?

4.0 (common US / many international programs), 5.0 (used by many universities worldwide), and Custom where you define letter → point values. Switching scale clears prior results until you recalculate.

How is semester GPA calculated?

GPA = Σ(credit hours × grade points) ÷ Σ(credit hours) for subjects in the active semester. Each letter maps to grade points on the selected scale.

How is CGPA different from averaging semester GPAs?

CGPA is cumulative: total grade points across all entered semesters ÷ total credits across those semesters. Averaging semester GPAs without weighting by credits can be wrong when credit loads differ.

What letter grades map to on the 4.0 scale?

A+/A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C− = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. The 5.0 scale uses the same letter steps on a 5-point maximum.

How is percentage estimated?

Percentage ≈ (CGPA ÷ scale maximum) × 100 — for example CGPA 3.5 on a 4.0 scale ≈ 87.5%. Institutions use different conversion tables; treat this as a rough estimate only.

Can I add multiple semesters?

Yes. Add semesters, name them, switch between tabs, and add up to 20 subjects per semester. Calculate once to update semester GPA and overall CGPA.

What is Custom scale for?

When your university uses non-standard points, edit each letter’s value or reset the map to the 4.0 defaults and adjust. Invalid or missing point values block calculation with a friendly error.

Does this match my official transcript?

Only if your institution uses the same scale, rounding, repeat-grade policy, and credit rules. Always defer to your registrar or student portal for official GPA.

Are my grades uploaded?

No. Subjects, credits, and grades are processed in your browser and are not uploaded to ToolsLibrary servers.
