Audio Converter

Free browser-based Audio Converter. Upload one audio file (up to 100 MB), choose a supported output format, and download the result. Supports MP3 to WAV, FLAC to MP3, M4A to MP3, AAC to MP3, OGG to MP3, MP3 to M4A, and WAV to FLAC. Processing runs locally with ffmpeg.wasm — files are not uploaded to ToolsLibrary servers. For WAV to MP3, use the dedicated WAV to MP3 Converter.

How to Use the Audio Converter

Upload one supported audio file, choose an allowed output format and bitrate when needed, convert locally with ffmpeg.wasm, then preview and download.

  1. Upload one audio file in MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC, or OGG (up to 100 MB).
  2. Select a supported output format for that input (same-format conversion is not offered).
  3. When output is MP3 or M4A, choose Standard (128 kbps), Balanced (192 kbps), or High (320 kbps). WAV and FLAC outputs have no bitrate setting.
  4. Click Convert and wait while ffmpeg.wasm encodes locally — you can cancel if needed.
  5. Preview the result, then Download or Convert Another.

Methodology & multi-format audio transcoding

The audio engine parses audio containers and codecs (MP3, WAV, AAC, M4A, OGG, FLAC) using the Web Audio API and WebAssembly codecs. It handles channel downmixing (stereo to mono), resampling (e.g. 48 kHz to 44.1 kHz), and bit-depth normalization.

Lossless targets (FLAC, WAV) retain bit-perfect audio fidelity, while lossy targets (AAC, MP3, OGG) optimize bandwidth for streaming.

Worked audio format conversion example

  • Input: Smartphone voice memo in M4A/AAC format (15 MB).
  • Target: Standard broadcast WAV format (44.1 kHz, 16-bit stereo).
  • Processing: AudioContext decodes AAC stream and writes linear PCM headers and data chunks into a canonical RIFF WAV container.
  • Output: Broadcast-ready uncompressed WAV file (85 MB) compatible with legacy digital audio workstations (DAWs).

Supported conversions (examples)

  • FLAC to MP3, OGG to MP3, M4A/AAC to MP3
  • MP3 to WAV, MP3 to M4A
  • WAV to FLAC
  • WAV to MP3 is not in this tool — use WAV to MP3 Converter

Privacy

Audio is processed locally with ffmpeg.wasm. Files are not uploaded to ToolsLibrary servers. Converter history, if enabled, stores filenames and format metadata only — never audio content.

Limitations

One file up to 100 MB. Only listed format pairs are supported; exotic codecs inside M4A/AAC may fail. MP3 to WAV cannot restore lossy quality. Large FLAC or uncompressed outputs may exhaust memory on phones. WAV to MP3 belongs in the dedicated WAV to MP3 Converter.

FAQ

What is an audio converter?

An audio converter changes an audio file from one format to another. This tool runs in your browser and supports common conversions such as FLAC to MP3 and MP3 to WAV.

Which formats can I convert?

Upload MP3, WAV, FLAC, M4A, AAC, or OGG. Supported outputs depend on the input — for example FLAC to MP3, MP3 to WAV, OGG to MP3, MP3 to M4A, and WAV to FLAC. WAV to MP3 is not included; use the dedicated WAV to MP3 Converter for that.

Is my audio uploaded to a server?

No. Your file is processed in your browser with ffmpeg.wasm and is not uploaded to ToolsLibrary servers.

Does MP3 to WAV improve quality?

No. MP3 to WAV creates an uncompressed WAV file, but it cannot restore quality already lost in the original MP3. The WAV may also be much larger.

Which MP3 bitrate should I choose?

Balanced (192 kbps) is the default for most music. Use Standard (128 kbps) for smaller files or speech. Use High (320 kbps) when you want the largest MP3 preset this tool offers.

Can I convert WAV to MP3 here?

No. WAV to MP3 is handled by the separate WAV to MP3 Converter at /tools/converters/wav-to-mp3.

Will stereo be preserved?

Yes when the source is stereo. This tool preserves the source channel layout and sample rate by default.

Can I use this on mobile?

Yes on supported mobile browsers, but use smaller files when possible. Large FLAC or MP3 to WAV conversions may fail on low-memory devices.

Why did conversion fail?

The file may be corrupted, use an unsupported codec inside M4A/AAC, exceed the size limit, or be too large for this browser's memory. Try a shorter file or a different format.
