How to Use the Universal Image Converter

Upload images and compress or convert them in your browser with AI Smart Compression or Manual settings. Processing uses the Canvas API locally — files are not uploaded for compression.

  1. Upload one or more images with drag-and-drop or the file picker.
  2. Stay on AI Smart Compression (default) or switch to Manual for full control of format, quality, and resize.
  3. In Smart mode, optionally set a Target File Size (KB), review the AI recommendation, and pick a Smart Preset (Email, Website, WhatsApp, and others).
  4. Select AI Optimize (Smart) or Convert (Manual) and wait for processing.
  5. Compare original vs optimized size and preview when shown, then Download each file. With more than one result, use Download ZIP.
  6. Use Reset when finished to clear files and temporary preview URLs.

How compression works

Each image is decoded, optionally resized, then re-encoded with canvas.toBlob to JPG/JPEG, PNG, WebP, BMP, GIF (still), or ICO. AI Smart Compression is a local heuristic — it does not upload images to a cloud service.

Format notes

  • JPEG uses a white background when converting from transparency.
  • PNG keeps alpha when encoding PNG.
  • WebP is often a strong web choice for photos.
  • GIF export via canvas is a still image — animation is not preserved.
  • AVIF may appear in recommendations but encoding falls back to WebP when the browser cannot encode AVIF.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting every image to shrink by the same amount.
  • Re-compressing the same output repeatedly with little extra savings.
  • Choosing very low quality without checking the preview.
  • Assuming animated GIF or full AVIF encode is preserved.

Limitations

No fixed reduction percentage, no universal format support beyond browser decode/encode, and no animated GIF preservation via canvas. Admin limits and device memory apply. Smart AI labels are local heuristics only.

Privacy

Analysis and compression run entirely in your browser. Images are not uploaded to ToolsLibrary servers. Canvas re-encoding typically does not carry original camera EXIF into the new file.

How much can an image be compressed?

There is no fixed percentage. Results depend on format, dimensions, existing compression, content, and settings. The UI shows estimates and actual before/after sizes after you run optimize or convert.

Can I reduce image size without losing quality?

Not as a guarantee. JPEG/WebP re-encoding is typically lossy below maximum quality. Use higher quality or milder presets, check the before/after preview, and keep originals when you need an archive copy.

Can I compress multiple images?

In AI Smart Compression you can set an optional KB budget. The tool adjusts quality and, if needed, resolution to aim under that size for JPG/WebP (PNG target-size search is limited).
