How to Use the Document Scanner

Capture or upload pages, crop and enhance each scan, optionally annotate and run OCR, then export JPG or searchable PDF — all locally in your browser.

  1. From Home, choose a scanner mode (document, receipt, ID, or business card) and start a new scan or open a saved document.
  2. Capture with your camera or upload an image; adjust the four corner handles and confirm the crop.
  3. Apply an enhance preset (auto, grayscale, high contrast, etc.) and review the corrected page.
  4. Optionally annotate with highlights, shapes, or text, then run OCR if you need selectable text.
  5. Add more pages from Manage, reorder or duplicate as needed.
  6. Export JPG, image PDF, or searchable PDF and save the document to IndexedDB for later editing.

  • Capture / upload → crop (perspective warp) → enhance → annotate → OCR → export.
  • Edge detection pre-positions corners; manual drag always available.
  • Searchable PDF requires successful OCR on at least one page.

Privacy

Images, OCR text, and PDFs are processed on your device. IndexedDB saves stay local until you delete them or clear site data.

Limitations

Camera access requires HTTPS and user permission. OCR quality varies with handwriting and low-resolution photos. Admin-configured page and upload size limits apply.

FAQ

Are my documents uploaded to a server?

No. Capture, enhancement, OCR, and PDF export run in your browser. ToolsLibrary does not receive your document images or OCR text.

Can I create a searchable PDF?

Yes. After OCR succeeds, export a searchable PDF with an invisible text layer. If OCR fails, you can still download an image-based PDF.

Does the camera work on desktop?

Where the browser supports getUserMedia and a camera is available. Otherwise upload photos from disk — upload always works.

Where are saved documents stored?

Optional saves use IndexedDB on your device only. Clearing browser site data removes them. Nothing is synced to ToolsLibrary servers.

Is automatic edge detection perfect?

Detection is a best-effort bright-region heuristic. You can always adjust the four corners manually before confirming the crop.

Can I scan multiple pages into one PDF?

Yes. Add pages from camera or upload, reorder them in Manage, then export a multi-page PDF with optional OCR text layers.

What scanner modes are available?

Document, receipt, ID card, and business card modes tune enhancement presets for typical paper sizes and contrast.

Can I annotate before export?

Yes. Use the annotate step to draw highlights, rectangles, freehand marks, or text notes on the corrected page.

What export formats are supported?

Per-page JPG, multi-page image PDF, and searchable PDF after OCR. Choose export options on the final step.

Why did OCR return poor text?

OCR accuracy depends on focus, lighting, and skew. Re-capture with better light, adjust corners tightly, and try a stronger enhance preset before re-running OCR.
