Word + Character Counter

Paste or type text into this free word counter and character counter to get instant word count, character count (with and without spaces), sentence count, paragraph count, line count, and estimated reading and speaking time. Unicode-aware segmentation for English, Urdu, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, and other languages where the browser supports Intl.Segmenter. Everything runs locally in your browser — text is not uploaded, and tool history is disabled so pastes are not saved. One global page; no language-specific doorway URLs.

How to Use the Word + Character Counter

Paste or type text to see live word, character, sentence, paragraph, and line counts, plus editable reading and speaking time estimates.

  1. Paste or type your text into the Your text box.
  2. Review Words and Characters in the live stats cards.
  3. Check Characters (no spaces), Sentences, Paragraphs, and Lines if you need those totals.
  4. Optionally adjust Reading speed (WPM) and Speaking speed (WPM) to refine time estimates.
  5. Use Copy stats or Copy text when you need the summary or the draft elsewhere; Clear resets the box.

Methodology & Unicode text segmentation

Text metric calculation applies Unicode Standard Annex #29 (UAX #29) text segmentation rules. Rather than naive whitespace splitting, the counter respects grapheme clusters, language boundaries, and punctuation rules across multilingual texts.

Reading and speaking time estimates assume industry benchmarks: 200 words per minute (WPM) for silent reading and 130 WPM for verbal presentation.

Worked text analysis example

  • Sample input: 'The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. It was a sunny morning in April 2026.'
  • Computed metrics: - Character count (with spaces): 84 characters - Character count (without spaces): 70 characters - Word count: 16 words - Sentence count: 2 sentences - Average word length: 4.4 characters - Estimated reading time: ~5 seconds.
  • Use case: Ad copy character limit verification (e.g. Google Ads 90-character headline/description limits).

Counting method

When Intl.Segmenter is available, words use Unicode word segmentation (isWordLike) and characters prefer grapheme clusters. Without Segmenter, the tool falls back to whitespace word splits and code-point character counts. The Method & limitations panel shows which method is active.

Common mistakes

  • Pasting more than the intended passage (headers, footnotes, or another section).
  • Confusing word count with character count.
  • Assuming punctuation is never part of a word — Segmenter rules may differ from school style guides.

Privacy

All counting runs in your browser. Text is not uploaded to ToolsLibrary servers or a counting API. Tool history is disabled so pastes are not saved in local history.

Limitations

Reading and speaking times are WPM estimates, not personal measurements. School or platform counting rules may differ from Unicode segmentation. Without Intl.Segmenter, scripts without spaces between words are undercounted. This tool does not hard-code social-platform character limits.

FAQ

How do I count words?

Paste or type your text into the box. The Words card updates live. When Intl.Segmenter is available, word-like Unicode segments are counted; otherwise the tool splits on whitespace.

How do I count characters?

The Characters card totals user-perceived characters (grapheme clusters when available), including spaces. Characters (no spaces) excludes whitespace such as spaces, tabs, and newlines.

Does the character count include spaces?

Yes for Characters. Use Characters (no spaces) when you need a total that excludes spaces, tabs, and newlines.

Does punctuation count?

Punctuation characters are included in the character totals. Whether punctuation is treated as part of a “word” depends on Unicode word segmentation (or the whitespace fallback), not on a school style guide.

Can I paste text into the counter?

Yes. Paste or type into Your text. You can also Copy text or Copy stats, and Clear to reset.

Can I use it for essays?

Yes as a word count checker for drafts and assignments. Paste only the passage that should count, and confirm your instructor’s counting rules if they differ from Unicode segmentation.

Does it calculate reading time?

Yes. Reading time ≈ word count ÷ reading WPM (default 200). Speaking time uses a separate editable rate (default 150 WPM). Both are estimates.

Is my text uploaded or stored?

No. Counting runs entirely in your browser. Text is not uploaded or sent to a counting API, and tool history is disabled so pastes are not saved in local history.

Does the counter work on mobile?

Yes. The same browser-based counters work on mobile browsers. Unicode Segmenter support depends on the device browser; the Method & limitations panel shows the active method.

What counts as a word in Chinese or Japanese?

With Intl.Segmenter, word-like Unicode segments are used and usually work better than whitespace splitting. Without Segmenter, the tool splits on whitespace and undercounts scripts that do not put spaces between words. Check the Method & limitations panel for the active method.
