Memory Game
Test recall by matching every pair of hidden cards. Choose one of seven themes and a 12-, 16-, or 24-card board, then compare your move count and time with the best result saved for that theme and difficulty.
How to Use the Memory Game
Reveal two cards at a time and remember their positions. The timer starts with your first flip, and one move is counted whenever you reveal the second card of a turn.
- Choose Animals, Fruits, Flags, Technology, Cars, Programming, or Numbers. Changing the theme starts a fresh shuffled board.
- Select Easy, Medium, or Hard; this changes the board from 6 to 8 or 12 pairs and changes the number of available hints.
- Click or tap a hidden card, then choose a second. Keyboard users can focus a card button and press Enter or Space.
- Remember mismatched symbols and their positions. Matching cards remain open while mismatches close automatically.
- Use Hint only when no unmatched card is open; it briefly reveals one pair and reduces the hint counter.
- Match all pairs to stop the timer. Compare moves first and time second with the saved best for the current theme and difficulty.
Strategies
- Scan the board in a repeatable order so each revealed symbol has a clear location in your memory.
- When the first card matches something seen earlier, choose that known location instead of opening a new card.
- Optimize accuracy before speed: unnecessary guesses increase the move count, which ranks ahead of time.
Common mistakes
- Changing theme or difficulty restarts immediately and clears the unfinished game.
- A move means a completed two-card turn, not each individual card flip.
- Hints reveal a pair temporarily; they do not mark it as matched.
Persistence and privacy
Game state, best results, and sound preference stay in localStorage on this device. Clearing site data removes them, and there is no cloud backup, leaderboard, multiplayer mode, or daily puzzle. Optional tones are generated by the browser and do not use recorded audio or a microphone.
FAQ
How do I play?
Select two hidden cards. A matching pair stays face up; a mismatch turns back over after a short pause. Match every pair to win.
What do Easy, Medium, and Hard mean?
Easy is 4×3 with 6 pairs and 3 hints, Medium is 4×4 with 8 pairs and 2 hints, and Hard is 6×4 with 12 pairs and 1 hint.
How is the best result chosen?
Best results are tracked separately for each theme and difficulty. Fewer moves ranks first; if move counts tie, the faster time wins.
What does a hint reveal?
A hint briefly turns over one unmatched pair for about 1.2 seconds and uses one of the limited hints for that difficulty. Hints are unavailable while cards are already open.
Can I play with a keyboard or touch screen?
Yes. Tap or click cards on touch and pointer devices. With a keyboard, move focus through the card buttons and press Enter or Space to flip one; there are no custom game shortcuts.
Where are progress and best scores stored?
An unfinished game, best results, and the sound preference are stored locally in this browser. Completed games are not kept as resumable saves, and nothing syncs to another device.
